Frequently asked questions

The short version: yes it works, yes it can be intense, no I don't take insurance, and the answer to almost everything else is "call or text me." The long version is below.

Your first visit

What happens at my first appointment?

We talk before I touch anything. Your online health intake form must be completed before your appointment; it's required, and it's what lets me plan your session before you walk in. When you arrive, we go through your history, what hurts, what you've already tried, and what you want to be able to do again. Then the actual work starts, and I explain what I'm finding as I go. Please arrive five minutes early to get situated.

Why is your shortest session 90 minutes?

Because nobody's back gets fixed in 30. A real session has parts: assessing what's going on, warming the tissue, working to identify the thing that is actually causing the pain (which is often not where you feel it), and then integrating the work so it holds. Rushing any of those means you're paying for a massage instead of a result. Most of my clients end up coming less often, not more, because the work lasts.

What should I wear? Do I have to undress?

Undress to your level of comfort, always. That said, in twenty years every client has ended up nude or in their underwear, because this kind of work depends on my ability to feel the tissue directly. Someone once kept their jeans on; I couldn't feel a thing, and the denim gave me a rug burn. But I will never push you to do anything you don't want to do. What I can promise is that no one is ever exposed, not for a second. I use tight, tucked "diaper" draping: the sheet is secured snugly around you at all times so only the area I'm working on is uncovered, and you stay covered while you turn over, while I work your hips, all of it. I walk you through every single step before it happens, so nothing is a surprise. I've been the client on a table with a therapist who was careless about this, and I never forgot how that felt, so I go the extra mile. If you're nervous, tell me; that's exactly the person I'll take the most care with.

The work itself

Does it hurt?

Sometimes, and I'll be honest with you about it. Therapeutic work on tissue that has been locked up for years can be intense, and one of my clients famously described it as "a world of hurt that later yields less pain." That said, you are in charge. I adjust pressure the moment you ask, I coach you through the hard spots, and we stop whenever you need a break. Pain that makes you brace against the table doesn't help anyone; I work at the edge, not past it.

Will I be sore afterward?

Often, for a day or two, the way you'd be sore after a good workout. Drink water, move gently, and don't schedule a marathon for the next morning. The relief that follows the soreness is the part people come back for.

What's the difference between sports massage, deep tissue and myofascial release?

Sports massage is about how your body performs: muscle, tendon and ligament function, range of motion, recovery.

Deep tissue is slow, specific pressure into the deeper layers that are holding tension.

Myofascial release works the connective tissue and the trigger points that are causing the pain, rather than only the spot where you feel it.

In practice I blend them; you may get one technique in a session or five, depending on what your body needs that day.

What is abdominal and visceral massage?

Gentle, specific work on the abdomen and the connective tissue around the organs. It helps with abdominal tension, adhesions after surgery, digestive discomfort, and low-back or hip pain that actually starts in front. Very few therapists in this area offer it, and clients tell me it's the piece they couldn't find anywhere else.

What is Active Isolated Stretching?

Assisted stretching done in short, repeated holds of about two seconds, which restores range of motion without triggering the muscle's protective reflex. It isn't a separate service; I weave it into sessions wherever your body needs it, and it's a big part of why the work holds after you leave.

What kinds of problems do you work with?

Chronic back, neck and shoulder pain, sciatica and hip pain, sports injuries, whiplash and car-accident injuries, post-surgical scar tissue and adhesions, the tightness that comes with conditions like cerebral palsy, and the general wear of desk jobs, long shifts and long commutes. I'm not a doctor and only occasionally a miracle worker: massage supports your medical care, it doesn't replace it, and I don't diagnose.

How often should I come?

It depends on what we're working on. An acute problem usually means a few sessions close together, then we space them out as things improve. For maintenance, many clients settle into every four to six weeks. We'll figure out a plan on your first visit, and it will be built around your body, not a package I'm trying to sell you.

Do you do prenatal or infant massage?

No. Lifeworks Massage does not provide prenatal bodywork, and I don't work on babies or children. If you're pregnant, tell me before we book and I'll point you toward someone who specializes in it.

Booking, rates and policies

What are your rates?

Sessions are 90 minutes for $210, 120 minutes for $280, 150 minutes for $350, and 180 minutes for $420. Full details are on the Rates page.

Do you take insurance?

No. Lifeworks Massage does not accept health insurance or auto (PIP) insurance. I can provide a receipt for your records.

Can I pay with an HSA or FSA card?

Not yet in New Jersey. I'm working on setting it up, so check back or ask when you book.

How do I book?

First-time clients book online through the Book Online page, which is open 24 hours a day and is also where your intake form and prepayment live. Once you're an established client, you can book online any time, call or text (201) 743-8042, or set up your next visit before you leave the studio. Hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, 10 AM to 5 PM.

Why is my first session prepaid?

Because a 90-minute appointment is a real commitment on both sides. Prepaying holds your time on a calendar with only so many spots in a week, and it lets me spend the days before your visit reading your intake form and planning your session instead of chasing paperwork. It also makes the visit itself simpler: you walk in, we work, you walk out. Prepaid sessions are nonrefundable, but if plans change with more than 48 hours' notice, the full amount stays on your account as a credit for 12 months.

What is your cancellation policy?

Please give 48 hours' notice. Appointments cancelled within 48 hours, and no-shows, are charged the full cost of the session. Cancel by call or text at (201) 743-8042, not email. Prepaid sessions are nonrefundable; if you cancel outside 48 hours, the credit stays on your account for 12 months.

One thing that makes this fairer: I keep a waitlist, and a cancelled spot is offered to it right away. If the whole session gets rebooked, you owe nothing. If only part of the time fills, you're charged only the difference.

Do you have a waitlist?

Yes, and it's all online. When you book, you can add yourself to the waitlist for the time you want. If that time opens up, the system texts you automatically, and you have seven minutes to claim it before it texts the next person on the list. It moves fast, so if you want the session, grab it. Cancellations go to the waitlist first, so it works both ways: you get in sooner, and the client who had to cancel isn't stuck with a fee for a spot someone else was glad to take.

What if I'm running late?

The time I set aside is yours, so the session still ends at the scheduled time and is billed in full. If you're stuck on the Turnpike, text me; I'll do what I can with the time we have.

What if I'm sick?

Stay home and we'll reschedule, no hard feelings. A fever, an undiagnosed rash or anything contagious means massage isn't a good idea for either of us that day.

Anything else I should know before I come in?

Arrive clean and free of perfume, essential oils and smoke. Tell me about every medical condition and injury on your intake form, and about any changes in your health since your last visit. Sessions are strictly professional and non-sexual, and I keep your records confidential.

Finding me Where are you, and where do I park?

411 Broadway, Suite 107, inside European Salon Suites in Bayonne, close to the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail.

Street parking on Broadway is metered with a two-hour limit, so if you've booked a 150- or 180-minute session, park on a side street, where there's no time limit, or use the paid lot at 19th Street and Broadway.

Do you offer gift certificates?

As a general rule, no. Too many of them sit unused for years, and gift cards never expire, so I stopped selling them. If you're an established client and want to give a session to a friend or family member, ask me; I've made exceptions for people I know.

I still have a question!

Call or text (201) 743-8042 or email info@lifeworksmassage.com. If it's about your body, I'd rather hear about it before your appointment than during it, if it's an important issue I should know ahead of time.
